Like me you may have spotted in the crowd, awaiting the new Pope, the Moors Head on the Corsican flag. That wasn’t the only Corsican connection. The new Pope was introduced to the world by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti whose father hailed from Vico in Corsica. The new Pope is Leo XIV.
Interesting fact - I discovered that a much earlier Pope Leo, the third, also had a Corsican connection. In the year 808 he entrusted Corsica to Charlemagne to provide security from Saracen raids and refuge for Corsicans in and around Rome.
